EQUINE FACILITATED LEARNING
Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL): Students develop new ways of approaching difficulties; gain the confidence to manage everyday situations effectively and appropriately today and in the future. Students build resilience by learning to make subtle changes in their lives so they can respond skilfully to situations they may find challenging. EFL is the basis of all learning at Horwood Coombe, and two herds of horses support this.
Grounding: Modern lifestyle disconnects us from the earth's electrons, which naturally promotes physiological change. Grounding is achieved by direct contact with the surface of the earth and ‘Grounding Systems’. We use a combination of Holistic and Therapeutic practices, Blue Space, Animals and connection with the Earth’s Elements – Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
EFL has proven, lasting and positive effects helping people physically, emotionally and psychologically. The benefits include:
-
Decreased blood pressure, lower stress levels and reduced tension. Mental health professionals say maintaining a connection with nature can support emotional and mental well-being.
-
Less anger, anxiety or nerves leads to more patience and a greater ability to better cope with feelings, emotions, conflict and change—a calmer, more centred and focused mindset.
-
Ability to overcome fear leading to empowerment and increased self-esteem.
-
Improved communication skills – verbal and non-verbal: Feeling empathy for others and nature. Clearer, more appropriate thoughts and actions
-
A multitude of health benefits to being outside - sunlight and soil microorganisms boost the body’s serotonin levels, the chemical linked to feelings of well-being, while vitamin D, which is essential for bone and muscle health, is also provided by the sun’s rays.
-
Better sleep and a lifted mood.
-
Heightened happiness, self-esteem and confidence.
